25th May 2003 16.00 - Microsoft TechDays

I thought I would give some pointers as to how it went at Microsoft TechDays in Denmark from the 21st to the 23rd of May 2003. Part of the reason is so I can remember when some time has passed :-)

A colleague and I hit the train on 5 AM on Wednesday, and was at Odense Congress Center (where the TechDays where going to be held) at 08.30. As usual when Microsoft throws events/conferences like this nothing is missing! In the morning there are bread and coffee and during the afternoon coffee and cake is coming in at a steady pace.
The first two days was focused on Visual Studio .NET and Windows Server 2003, the last one on Office System 2003.

On Wednesday I attended the following sessions:

Keynote by Morten Strung Nielsen on The .NET Vision
.NET Developer WorkBench by Richard Lloyd Money
Automated builds using Visual Studio .NET and Visual Source Safe
IIS 6 Security
Getting started with WS-Security and WS-Routing

On Thursday I attended the following sessions:

Keynote by Tony Goodhew Product Manager on improvements to The .NET Framework, C# and VB
Build your own Weblog with RSS Feed using ASP.NET by Tony Goodhew
Interse: Intelligent integration of Information by Mogens Nielsen
Code Access Security in ASP.NET by Michel Baladi
Proces and Security model in IIS 6 by Michel Baladi

On Friday I attended the following sessions:

Keynote by Lone Lyth, Erik Dibbern Roser and Torben Marcussen on The new Office System 2003
Visual Studio .NET Tools for Office by Erik Dibbern Roser
Advanced XML in Word 2003 by Erik Svensen
Smart Tags and Smart Documents in Office 2003 by Erik Svensen
Development of solutions using InfoPath by Ole Kjeldsen

In the evening on Wednesday there was some entertainmnet in a Cafe area in the Congress Center where one could compete using RC jeeps and XBox's.
On Thursday evening Microsoft had arranged for the participants to go to the movies. One picked between three movies: Matrix Reloaded, The Recruit or X Men 2; I saw The Recruit.

My colleague and I took the train home to Aalborg at 17.30 and I was home at nine O'clock. And after the three intense days I really needed to relax.

All in all I was very happy with TechDays, we had a great trip :-)
If only I could convince someone to pay for a trip to TechEd 2003 in Barcelona....

14th May 2003 19.50 - Remote Desktop

I just fumbled a bit around with Remote Desktop in Windows XP, and man is that cool!!! The fact that you can log on to remote computer and control is nice, but not that innovative, I mean that's what *NIX people do all the time - including me, which is exactly how I update these pages - the really amazing part is the added features. You can tell the Remote Desktop Connection program to automatically transport all played sounds on the remote computer to your local machine, or you can leave it on the remote computer. Plus, you can choose to map you local drive on the remote machine so you have access to all your files, and ability to copy back and forth.

This little program is great, and I just wish I had taken the small amount of time to try it out long before now...

And by the way, you can download and install the Remote Desktop Client for Windows 2000 so that you can control your computers from Win 2000 also.

13th May 2003 13.15 - Windows Server 2003 and VS.NET 2003 launch

Yesterday I attendend the launch of Microsoft's new products Windows Server 2003 and Visual Studio .NET 2003 in Århus. It was mighty cool! Before lunch there was a 2 hour long presentation of the new products in which there were embedded some funny shows. 3 people from a danish tv series (Langt fra Las Vegas - Frank Hvam, Katja Kean and Nils Buckingham) made periodic shows. After lunch there were 3 sessions for developers and the day ended with Carpark North playing and attendees geting free beer. Mighty great!!! ;-)

Just read this article on java.sun.com about the new language features in Java 1.5 codename Tiger. It is quite amazing how after .NET/C# came the Java guys have been busy to implement stuff that was cool in C# in Java. Finally though Sun has understood that boxing is actually pretty darn nice!

3rd May 2003 21.10 - Communion

Tomorrow my sister is having her communion (konfirmation in danish), so we'll go to church at 10, and afterwards have a "party" with the whole family.
It's gonna be nice, and hopefully she'll get some good presents :-)

I'm considering installing Windows Server 2003 on my spare machine. It would be nice to use the new server software for real; plus I could have a closer look on Web Services and their support in Windows Server 2003.

The new battery I got for my laptop is great! It has a very high capacity, so now I'm not so dependent on being near a power source when I'm working on my laptop, at least not as much as I were before.

I'm going to attend TechDays which Microsoft Danmark is hosting in Odense in the end of March. I'm going there with a collegue of mine from work, and I think it'll be very exciting! The web site says that there are over 60 different sessions to chose from, so there'll definitely be a chance to learn something.

After some small glitches the new Intel P4 3.0 GHz with 800 MHz FSB has been released. Damn, I would like to get my sweaty hands on one of those! ;-)

27th April 2003 19.55 - Windows Server 2003 and Longhorn

Windows Server 2003 was launched on thursday, and I watched the live broadcast from San Francisco. That was kinda cool, to watch it over the internet while it was occuring in SF, US.

I read on Neowin that Longhorn was leaked in another alpha build (build no. 4015). Screenshots from it looks very interesting.

My trip to Aarhus for a .NET student seminar went well, the seminar was kinda boring, since I had heard most of the talks before. Luckily I meet Martin "Gimpster" Geisler and we walked around in Aarhus and afterwards I saw his dormitory. So all in all the day ended great afterall :-)

I've now run with the Office System 2003 for a while, and so far I've had nothing to complain about. It works smoothly and looks great. Starting to take a closer look on the InfoPath app, on which I might develop a solution for work. So far the idea is mostly vague, hopefully not for long.

On a hardware note I've got a new battery for my laptop; the old one was getting very crappy!

Tada...

20th April 2003 00:10 - Upgraded Office to v. 2003

Just upgraded my Office XP installation to Office System 2003 Beta 2. The upgrade went smothly; amazingly enough when you think you're upgrading from a production release to a beta release. Way to go MS :-)

19th April 2003 18.15 - Servers and UPS

After having my serverrack standing alone not used, I've finally put my servers in it. Kinda looks good, the only problem is that the servers aren't rackmountable, and tower servers looks a bit stupid in a rack cabinet...

On another note speaking of servers my UPS came to work once again today around noon. The power company had some problems, and I was out of power for 45 min. That sucks! Thank god there are UPS's around otherwise my life would be a stinking hell... :-)

Tuesday I'm attending a .NET seminar in Aarhus; from what I know at the moment it looks promising... at least the sessions before noon.

31st March 2003 17.00 - Closer look at the Office 2003

Well I've just got my hands on the Beta 2 Kit and I must say "I'm impressed!". The kit contains a whopping 18 cd's, with 15 of them being acutal apps and the last 3 demo, evaluation and developer cd's.

So far I haven't installed anything yet - since I'm not home, but I plan to do it as soon as I get home :-)

I've been watching some of the demo videos and presentations included on the cd's, and so far InfoPath strikes me as the cooler app. I'm very must looking forward to checking it out!

31st March 2003 12.50 - Office 2003 Beta 2 Kit

My Office 2003 Beta 2 Kit has just arrived!! I just gotta pick it up this afternoon.

Pure greatness!

29th March 2003 15.15 - A new computer?

After reading this entry in Don Box' Spoutlet, I just had to read up on the P4 HyperThreaded (HT) CPU. And after doing that I must admit that that is definitely the CPU that'll be the base for my next system!

The CPU roughly explained is designed so that it appears as if there are two logical processors in the machine, and therefore the system can simultaneously execute two threads thereby performing better.

I looked at a P4 HT running at 3.06 GHz with an Asus motherboard and 512 MB DDR SDRAM, and from what I can estimate the price tag for that will be 8100 Danish Kroner, which is quite a large amount given that there is no GFX card or anything in.
But hey new shit is expensive ;-)

As I side note I've handed in the .NET service I've been codin' for Work. It's a Windows Service that when activated via a timer checks if new Word or Excel documents have arrived in a software system that we sell, and if there are it automatically converts them to various formats. From what I know it works as it's supposed to, but I guess I'll find out after Work has tested it extensively :-)
Now I beginning to expand the service to handle sending of e-mail in a batch job from the same system.

By the way Windows Server 2003 was marked as RTM (Release To Manufacturing) today!
I'm still waiting for my Office 2003 Beta 2 Kit, but it should arrive in a couple of days. I'm especially looking forward to trying out InfoPath the new XML app.

15th March 2003 16.10 - New Page

Added a new page about Java.

Check it out :-)

3rd March 2003 10.00 - Which OS are You?

Guess I should be starting installin' Slackware then... :-)

Which OS are You?
Which OS are You?

Post the result in the guestbook...

1st March 2003 13.50 - Nothing much to say

Guess I'll just write a little piece here.

My exams went okay, at least I don't have do attend any reexam. That's nice!

Since I've started a new semester I've also gotten in a new group. The project we're gonna make this semester is constructing a language that can be used for simulating peoples movemet in an urban environment, and spitting out lots of data that can be used for data mining using Business Intelligence.
It's okay pretty exciting, although my main interest is in learning how you construct a language, write a compiler, etc.

Mid March I'm going to Cebit with a friend of mine. That's gonna be great! I'm already looking forward to seeing what must be the biggest IT and Computer fair in the world.

'Till next time

19th January 2003 13.25 - Exam's over, a new one awaits

So my Exam in Algorithms is done, and I'm waiting for the grade. Don't know how long it will take before I get it...
It was a pretty hectic exam, I spent all three hours writing down my solutions, luckily I didn't have to think to much about what the solution was, it more or less came to me. If it hadn't been like that I would have been lost!

This thursday the group and I is up for project exam. Pretty exciting how that'll go about!

Made big english breakfeast this morning with some of the guys from the dormitory. Nice!

12th January 2003 13.30 - A New Year has come upon us

Quite a lot has happened since my last post!
Obivious things are of course Christmas and New Year. Spend Christmas with the family and got a lot of good food, and of course some pretty nice presents :-)
New Year was spend with friends, where the beer and champagne was in excess amounts...

At the university we've handed in our project, and the end result was quite decent, atleast we'll pass ;-)

The last couple of days I've been reading up on Algorithms since I have an exam in them on the 16th. I don't really know how I'll do, but I guess I'll find out. The exam is written and will last for 3 hours.

Just burned out the iso's for .NET Server RC2, haven't installed it yet though. I don't know if I'll have the time before the final shipment is made...

I'm still not impressed about Java, actually I've made a list during our project with stuff I dislike about Java. Maybe I should post it here...

27th October 2002 18.45 - Pom Pom

I won't even start about whining on how long it's been since I last updated this page.

The university projects is kind of tedious, we're spending a lot of time discussing things like analysis and design, and haven't even started codin' yet. My fingers long for the codin' experience! :)

I've got an apartment at a local dormitory - Aalborg Internationale Kollegium, so that's pretty cool! At the dorm you have the option of getting connected to Aalborg Universitys Internet line for 20 danish kroner a month - that's like US$ 3. So that's pretty cheap!
On top of that I now live even closer to the University than before, just half a kilometer; that rocks! :)

Random facts:
Upgraded my laptop so it now has 320 Mb RAM.
Is now convinced that Java is not what I want to spend a lot of time with (I won't even start with the shit that's bothering me about Java...)
Attended an event at CW Obel Dormitory on the 25th with Tuborg. They sponsored free beer for everyone, because they've just launched T-Beer. Short summary: Don't buy it, it suck

I guess that's it for now...
'Till next time: stay away for Java and continue to be mentally stable!

6th September 2002 13.25 - Sick today

I've caught the flu :(

Started university againg on tuesday, I guess it was okay. On wednesday we formed the groups that we'll work in for the rest of the semester. My group is making a program to record and calculate results from sailing tournaments. It's to be written in Java.

18th July 2002 22.10 - Got my UPS

I've finally got a UPS for my server. It is a APC Smart-UPS 700, and I'm using apcupsd as control daemon from my server. It's a pretty cool UPS with lots of extra power, so I'm planning on hooking up my firewall/gateway too.

Work is going okay, currently I'm planning and starting developing an intranet thingy in ASP.NET. I expect it to be quite cool.

The weather in Denmark is really sucky at the moment, and is probably going to be like this for the next week or so. :(

7th July 2002 20.20 - IPCop

I installed Smoothwall (see below), and thought "Hey, that's pretty cool!". Afterwards I found IPCop, installed it and immetiately knew that this was the cooler one :)
I now have a network configured in three zones: an external one (connected to the firewall through the RED ethernet card), an internal one (the GREEN ethernet card) and a DMZ (ORANGE ethernet card). The firewall makes sure that requests coming on port 80 (the http port) is forwarded to my server.
I strongly suggest that you install IPCop if you need a firewall/router/gateway.

First week at work is over. I guess it was okay, I haven't done alot in the past week, other than drinking quite a few cokes and surfin' then net :)

I kind of hope that next week will be more busy...

2nd July 2002 19.30 - Bought some stuff

Bought some ethernet cards and a switch. Actually I've bought 4 cards :) And I'll be using three of them in my SmoothWall firewall, when I get the time to set it up...

2nd July 2002 19.00 - Updated Server section

The headline says it all :)

Jump over to My server.

1st July 2002 20.30 - Reinstalling server

A week or so ago there the weather in Denmark was really bad. It rained a lot - more than it normally does ;) - and there was a lot of thunder. During this mayhem the power was off for a short period and my server couldn't handle this :( Therefore it needed a reinstall.
I started the reinstallation yesterday afternoon and after 5 hours the basis system was up. During the day I got mail and www to work, and now the server runs beautifully :)

The server is now installed with two RAID 5 arrays each consisting of three disks. I'm running kernel 2.4.18 and using ext3 as filesystem.
Finally managed to figure out what the onboard ethernet card is. It's not a 3Com card as I thought, it is an AMD PCNet PCI FAST card, which means that the driver supporting the card is distibuted in a standard kernel.

My next project is moving the server to another location and installing a firewall on an old box I have lying around. I think I'll have a rather thorough look on SmoothWall, which appears to be quite nice!

Started work today, which was kinda nice.

27th June 2002 15.40 - Vacation at last!

I'm finally done!
From now on I'm just gonna code, eat and drink beer. Nice! :)

On the 3rd of September I'm starting on Computer Science at Aalborg University, instead of Informatics which I started studying this year. I really looking forward to it, since Informatics was a bit too soft! Far to less codin' and far to much humanistic bladder.

On monday I'm starting at work, where I'll be codin' for June. In August I plan on taking a motorcycle license, and have some kind of vacation abroad.

Happy summerin'!

25th June 2002 21.40 - Damn!

I'm so looking forward to getting summer vacation! Only problem is that I have a math exam on thursday, and I can't really seem to take a hold of myself and solve som math problems.
I guess it'll go as it must. At least I hope.

Started reading 'Proffessional ASP.NET Speciel Edition' from Wrox Press. So far it is looking very good! The only problem with would be that it uses Visual Basic for the code examples, but that really doesn't matter.

On monday I'm starting at work fulltime. I'm really looking forward to it: Just codin' and relaxing. That's life!

24th June 2002 17.30 - Song and Math

Just finished retrieving a cool song - Blurry by Puddle of Mudd. Now that's nice!

Also started solving some math problems, since I have an exam in it on Thursday. I don't really know how it'll go, but hopefully okay.

Found some rather cool Server Controls for ASP.NET. They're called Internet Explorer WebControls. Go check'em out :-)

22nd June 2002 13.40 - Back from Sweden

I've been to Sweden on wednesday and thursday with the firm I work for. I was there with a couple of guys from work, and we visited a sister company.
Quite a nice trip, only thing bad about it was that we spend a lot of time in a train

Found a new ASP.NET editor that Microsoft has released. It's called ASP.NET Web Matrix, it's free, and actually pretty damn cool!
So if you're into ASP.NET development I suggest you go ahead and get it.

On a sad note my server broke down the other day :-( After a reboot it wouldn't start up services and stuff. I got it up and running but it's in single user mode. I guess I'll have to reinstall it sometime soon. During that I'll make full use of the RAID capabilities it has, so that an incident like this one wont be as bad in the future.

11th June 2002 13.45 - Computer Science Exam

I've just been to an exam in one of the courses I've followed this semester. The course was computer science, or to be more exact basic programming. I got the grade 10 which I think would translate to a B+ or A- in the US system.

In this course the language used was SML in a special variant called MosML. It's a weird language with a syntax in the like of LISP or something.
Actually I kind of like it :-) At least as a language to learn basic principles, I couldn't quite imagine codin' SML as a living.

8th June 2002 15.20 - Apache and Proxy

I've just found a way cool feature of Apache!
If you set up a domain or whatever in your httpd.conf, you can place additional directives in there instructing apache to redirect all request coming to this domain to another server. Well, that's okay, but it also means that you can redirect requests to a server on your local LAN.
This is way cool for me, since I only have one IP address with my ADSL connection. Using this feature means that I can have several servers - and even with different OS's - in the back and one public server, which will handle the redirecting, and the user won't feal a thing.
Pretty cool stuff!

If you want to set it up place something like this in your Apache's httpd.conf file:

     ProxyRequests On
     ProxyPass / http://<ip-of-server-to-redirect-to>/
     ProxyPassReverse / http://<ip-of-server-to-redirect-to>/
     ProxyVia Block
For example in a virtual host directive like this:
<VirtualHost <IP>>
    DocumentRoot /var/www/
    ProxyRequests On
    ProxyPass / http://<ip-of-server-to-redirect-to>/
    ProxyPassReverse / http://<ip-of-server-to-redirect-to>/
    ProxyVia Block
    ServerName domain.tld
</VirtualHost>

4th June 2002 17.00 - Yup!

What can I say? Alot has happened!

On the 27th of May my group and I handed in our project at the university after a pretty nasty couple of weeks!
The server is rocking away! Current uptime is 65 days! Recently I installed SpamAssassin on it, and if you can not guess what it does I will give you a clue - it finds and tags all spam mail entering my server. Now that is nice! This way it is possible to set up a filter in your .procmailrc or whatever mail client you uses that all mail with this tag should be deleted of moved to a special folder.
I currently considering whether or not to move this domain, ziaNET.dk, over to my server, and I think I will. But it will probably be some time.
I have got at new machine, an Athlon XP 1700+ with some stuff in it :-) It is currently running Windows XP, which some people might find weird. But I actually like it. On a side note I am currently looking into the .NET framework and Visual C#.NET, and from what I have seen I really like it! This summer I will be coding some stuff at work using the .NET framework, so that will be interesting. Haven't givin' up on PHP though :-)

That's it! Maybe I'll be back again soon....

25th April 2002 14.00 - Hehe, I love my laptop!

http://www.theinquirer.net/a_23040203.htm

22nd April 2002 17.00 - Hate it!

Sometimes I just hate it when I'm right. I caught the flu, and was sick for about three days. Damn!
Anyway it gave me some time to set up my server to handle multiple domains with mail. After a bit of fiddling around I finally managed to set up Postfix. Now all email configuration takes place in a MySQL database, and that includes IMAP and POP, which is handled by Courier.

15th April 2002 17.40 - What's going on?

So what's happened? Well I turned 20 about a week ago. And now I'm currently working up a rather big hit of influenza... GREAT :-(

My ADSL line is running perfect, and my server is rocking aswell. The next step is to set up exim to run virtual domains with email, I just need to have a bit of time.
Was thinking about setting up qmail, but what the hell, exim will do...

And if you're in the neighborhood beware! I've just received my wireless network kit from Intel, so now I can surf and walk the garden. Quite cool actually :-)

13th March 2002 12.10 - I've got an ADSL line!!!

Woohoo!!! The line is up and running.

13th March 2002 10.15 - Made a new section

I've made a new section about my server, the IBM PC330 server.
I'll try to put up what I find interesting when playing with it.

The server is going to run on my ADSL line as a real web server, and therefore I'm currently looking at an UPS from APC - it's called an Smart-UPS-700, and it should be able to keep my server online even during power failures.
To communicate between the server and the UPS there's an Open Source program called apcupsd which can control the communication and make sure the server shutdowns gracefully when the UPS is out of power. Way cool! :-)

12th March 2002 16.30 - Getting an ADSL line

I'm getting an ADSL line tomorrow. Man I'm looking forward to it! Then I'll get rid of GVDNet, a really sucky ISP.

At the same time I'll put my server online (se below for more info). And that's gonna be fun :-)

10th March 2002 14.20 - New section

I've added a new section on Databases.

6th March 2002 17.30 - Been to Linux Forum

This weekend I was at Linux Forum 2002 in Copenhagen with Gimpster.

Linux Forum was actually a bit disappointing. It was a lot better last year where I was there with Gimpster and Tais.
Right now I pretty sure I won't be going next year.

The thing that sucked the most was that the speakers wasn't very technical, they were very general and didn't cover anything you couldn't read on a web page in 10 minuttes.

A good thing though... I got a T-shirt and an IBM-Linux-Penguin-Pin ® :-)

23rd February 2002 00.40 - Another seminar with Microsoft

Fate has it that I'm going to another seminar with Microsoft. This time in Aalborg, but the topic is once again .NET.

There will be presentations on Visual Studio.NET and the use of XML and ADO.NET, plus sessions on Visual Basic.NET, and of course general presentations.
I'm really looking forward to it.

I'm attending the seminar with a colleague of mine, so that's great.

Next weekend I'm going to LinuxForum with Gimpster, and that'll be lots of fun. We're going to stay in Copenhagen for the weekend, and attend the conference on Saturday.

Alot is going on at the moment, but I like it :-)

Btw. updated the 'Validate this critter' in the bottom to reflect XHTML strict, and I've updated the Books page.

19th February 2002 14.40 - Trip to Copenhagen with Microsoft

Yesterday I was at a conference in Copenhagen with Microsoft. They drove us from Aalborg to Copenhagen, where there were three sessions, gave us food, and drove us back. And all for free!

The conference was about .NET their new technology framework, and the sessions were great! Don Box had come from LA for a tour in Europe speaking on .NET and was also the one speaking at the sessions I was at. He is one of the most interesting speakers I've ever heard. He had no slides at all, but rather coded some stuff in Emacs on Windows XP and talked from that.
After seeing and hearing Don Box I may have to change my mind about Microsoft. Maybe they're not so bad after all. I mean, if a guy like him (with a background in Unix, Java, XML, and almost everything else) wants/can work for them maybe MS is okay afterall...

One thing is for sure: I'm going to look abit at that .NET thing, it sure looks interesting.

2nd February 2002 14.25 - XHTML 1.0 Transitional (Strict)

Most of my pages are now comply with XHTML 1.0 Transitional, and you can check it by following this link to W3C's validator and entering an URL of my site.
The pages that doesn't comply are the guestbook stuff, but that'll come eventually...

2nd February 2002 14.00 - Ordered an ADSL line

I've just ordered an ADSL line, and did it out of two reasons:

  • GVDnet (my current ISP) suck!
  • I want to run my own server

So now I'm just waiting :-) It'll probably take about a month or so before they come an install my DSL line.

When it's up and runnning the server a bought a little while ago will be placed on the line so I can start playing around with a real and live web-server. That'll be fun!

On the University side, I'm starting again on Monday where we'll make the groups which we'll write our project in for the next semester. I think I'm gonna write about collaboration in groups, and make a website that can support groups in their work.

And I'm going to LinuxForum 2002 with Gimpster on the 2nd of March. I'm really looking forward to it!

21st January 2002 18.35 - It's running!

The server I wrote about a couple of days ago is now running and I'm currently installing Debian on it.

The sucker is amazing! And I'm really looking forward to playing with some real server hardware.
I've configured the five SCSI disks in RAID 0 and the last disk is kept as a reserve. (RAID 0 means making two or more disks appear as one) That'll do for starters, since right now I just want to get Debian on it. Later on I'll experiment with different RAID configurations.

'Till next time... Happy Serving :-)

19th January 2002 16.25 - Wazzup? I've got a server...

My new server - an IBM PC 330

I've bought a server! An IBM PC 330 with the following specs:

  • Intel PII 266 MHz
  • 128 MB ECC SDRAM
  • Dual SCSI RAID motherboard
  • 6 IBM 4.5 GB Ultra Wide SCSI hard drives in hot-swap bays
  • SCSI CD-ROM drive
  • Floppy drive
  • 10/100 Mbit Ethernet card
  • Server cabinet

And the best thing is that it's fairly cheap, just around $500. I'm really looking forward to getting it, and getting the ability to toy around with a real server with RAID and SCSI disks.
The server weighs around 20 kg without the hard drives, and it's placed on a huge foot.

Almost forgot... Happy New Year :-)

22nd December 2001 17.40 - Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas to everyone reading this!

3rd December 2001 16.55 - Still alive

Well, I'm still alive... but I still haven't got any more time :-(

All the stuff I was going to, as mentioned in the last post, went very well and I learned alot.

Right now I'm focused on the project my group and I are writing about EPJ - Electronic Patient Journals. The deadline is 18th december, so we're getting there...

Oh in case I don't update until then... Merry Christmas!

3rd November 2001 16.10 - ...

It's been a long time since my last update, but things have been kind of hectic lately.

Attending the university and keeping up with my other obligations/interests, etc takes time.

Anyway, next week I'll be joining a workshop on the university dealing with why so many firstyear students drop out the first year. It's ECIU (Europen Consortium of Innovative Universities) that's arranging it. I think it's going to be very exciting.
At the end of the week I'll be attending a seminar called Future Camp, where the idea is to find out how to make Nordjylland a great IT region.

So much for now... keep smilin'

11th September 2001 18.40 - God damn!

It's absolutely terrible what has happened in the US.

I sincerely hope that the USA will haunt and deal with these fucked-up persons who comitted these excruciating acts of terror!

5th September 2001 20.25 - Ugly site

It just came to me... some people might think that this site is pretty ugly. So what - it's simple and loads fast, plus right now I don't have the time to do a full redesign.

5th September 2001 20.25 - New shot

There's a new screenshot - but since I nowadays run in DualHead it'll be pretty wide :-)

2nd September 2001 13.30 - Starting at the University

Tomorrow I'm starting at the University of Aalborg as an Informatics student. I'm pretty excited!

At 8 O'Clock there's breakfeast in Aalborg, and all of the new students is here. Somewhere around 2500 people I think.

13th August 2001 18.00 - DivX ;-)

After trying a lot of players (Xine, Avifile, XMPS, XMMS w. avifile-plugin,etc.) I've finally got it to work!

I compiled MPlayer and it just runs beautifully. MPlayer doesn't use a lot of ressources and can even play the DivX movies full-screen, which I couldn't get any of the other players to do.

Life's great when watching DivX on a 19" screen *lol*

1st August 2001 20.10 - My coke fridge have arrived

I've finally gotten my coca cola fridge. Woohoo!

Check out some pics at the Coke Fridge Page

7th July 2001 00.50 - Fuck it all!

Fuck ITCampus!

Fuck StudenterNet!

30th June 2001 16.25 - New equipment

Once again it's been a long time. Sorry for that. I've just been busy graduating and working.

On the positive side I've just ordered some new computer stuff. Two 19" Viewsonic monitors, a Microsoft Natural Pro keyboard, a Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer mouse, an IBM 40 GB harddrive, and a Matrox G450 DualHead graphicscard.
DualHead you say. Yeah! DualHead, I reply. It's just gonna be great.

I expect the stuff to arive sometime early next week. Uhhh... I can't wait :-)

Monday I'm starting for Studenternet, which is what I'll be doing for the whole of July. But more on that later.

4th June 2001 18.35 - Long time no see...

It's been a loooong time... but I've been busy.

I've mingled a bit with the site, and most of the pages should now be HTML 4.01 Strict compatible. There are some problems with the guestbook and my webcam page (which is secret for the moment :-) ), but heck, I've tried :-)

21st May 2001 23.15 - Ximian

I've done it! Ximian Gnome is now installed, and I'm currently downloading Evolution through Red Carpet, which is quite a nifty tool :-)

21st May 2001 16.25 - Faulty RAM

Finally, I got my act together and tested the RAM in my machine...and that was about time. It turned out that one block was full of errors (no wonder Mozilla kept doing segmentation faults), that one is now torn out and awaites replacement.
I used a program called Memtest86. You create a boot disk with the program, boots on it, and it will perform all kinds of tests. The Readme file is very exhaustive and tells you what and how the program performs the tests.

Right now I codin' on a project for my firm... nothing exciting.

19th May 2001 13.50 - Guestbook

Well I've got a Guestbook. Go ahead and sign it!

It's a script I found on a search from Google, and that's why it doesn't really fit my page style. But heck, it's a guestbook, and it'll do for starters.

One could wonder why I put up a guestbook, here's the reason. Upon reading some of the statistical material generated for my ISP, I found that a get a large number of sessions from North America. Pretty exciting, except I don't really know who it is or how they found my site. This is where the guestbook come into play. Perhaps some of these exciting guests will sign it, and I can see why they come her ;-)

'Till next time...

17th May 1002 20.35 - Speed

It's so great having a new fast computer! Now I can actually get some work done, without having to wait when I switch between emacs and my browser...

I've found program called Memtest86 to test your RAM with. I makes a bootable floppy, which launches a program that runs for about 11 hours testing ones RAM.
All I need now is to find out when I can spare 11 hours :-)

With Gimpster I tried to download Ximian Gnome, but without luck. The installer stops when verifying the downloaded packages. I tried to mail the support departement of Ximian, and the reply was 'do you have enough disk space?'. Well, I don't know, I though 360 Mb was enough.
After deleting files worh of 80 Mb I'm now trying again. Hope it works *crossing my fingers*.

16th May 2001 22.45 - New computer

I got my new computer yesterday at about 7 PM. Today the computer was finally working properly after a little help from Gimpster.

It runs with 140 MHz bus speed with a 7.5 multiplier, which gives around 1050 raw Athlon MHz :-) The machine has 384 Mb RAM in it. Beside that nothing big is going on. I'm getting a new keyboard, mouse, matrox G450 DualHead card, and a 19" screen.
.....

14th May 2001 14.45 - Ordered a new computer

That's it! I've done it... ordered a new computer that is. As I wrote yesterday it's a Athlon 1000 Mhz with 128 Mb SDRAM PC133, a Soltek motherboard with 266 Mhz FB, and a case. The rest of the essentiel parts I have in a box on the floor :-)
That setup should go for a while, and when I feel the need to upgrade I can take one part at a time. One thing is for sure, eventually I'll need a bigger harddrive. The one I use only has 2 GB of space.

13th May 2001 17.10 - Got a job for the summer

Now I know how to spend my summer. I'm going to participate in Studenternet's ITCampus 2001. The site is being build in PHP4 with MySQL and it'll use XML. I'm really looking forward to it!

Other than that nothing much is happening. I plan on buying a book on XML and XSL tomorrow or the day after that, so I can get up to speed on the technology.

And finally I've become so tired of my computer that I'll buy another one. Man, it is so slow, that I have to wait when I switch windows!! That suck! And it used to be okay fast, but suddenly over the last couple of days it's just been so slooooowww...
Anyway, I'm buying an Athlon 1000 Mhz with 128 Mb RAM (and I've got some RAM lying around to pop ind). For starters that'll do.

11th May 2001 10.10 - Exams!

Before I take on the dreadful thing the title suggests I'll tell what's happened over the last few days.

On Wednesday I "succeded" in getting sick, some kind of the flu with huge fever. But luckily it didn't last for long. I was more or less fresh yesterday where I had to come to school, 'coz our plan og exams were being published.

I got the four worst classes: Danish, History, Mathematics and Physics. Not that I suck at 'em, it's just that they are the single four classes we have in all of the three years, meaning the examination requirements for these classes are huge! Not much of life for Kristian over the next month or so....

On the MP3Server front I've decided to write a client for Windows in Delphi 5. Yeah, I know it isn't very linux-advocate-like, but I'm not skilled enough to do it under Linux :-(
Anyway, I'll publish something here when progress is coming (I've gotta get started first...).

6th May 2001 19.10 - What rocks?... My MP3Server!

Currently playing as I write this: [Wheatus] - [Teenage Dirtbag] [00:54/04:03] [ 22%] [95]

The server is now up and running. I can control it through a web interface from anywhere in the house (courtesy of a computer of course), use an app for Gkrellm, or use a ncurses app on the server itself. It's very cool and very neat.
Wish I had a digital camera to fill you in...

The only problem now is that I've already filled the harddrive with music. I better order that IBM 45 gig hard-drive anytime soon now.

On the more educative front I start on exams this week. Tuesday it's written physics. Now that's not going to be fun!

Playing while I upload :-): [Jennifer Lopez] - [Love Don`t Cost A Thing] [00:57/03:42] [ 25%] [95]

27th April 2001 19.00 - Take the test

Try the test... and see how good your BQ is :-)
secret link :-)

27th April 2001 18.00 - MP3 server - update

The sucker is working! After a bit of mingling around I got the sound card installed. Yesterday I installed a temporary 4 gig harddisk, but the plan is to upgrade that to an IBM 45 gig harddrive.

Machine info:

  • Pentium 133 MHz
  • 32 Mb RAM
  • 5 gigs of space
  • Soundblaster card

Not much, but it'll do. I'm about to install Debian Potato rev. 3 on it. After that I'll set up the mp3 server software.

25th April 2001 20.00 - MP3 server

I've been planning to set up an mp3 server for a while now and I'll soon do it.
It's going to work like a jukebox connected to my stereo. In this way I'll have all of my mp3-music at hand, instead of having it on 15 cds.

More info as I start setting it up.

24rd April 2001 18.50 - New shot

Hurry! Hurry! There's a new screenshot in the 'Screenshots Department'. Hope you like it :-)

As the shot says I've installed GKrellM. It's very cool! I've got the weather plugin working, so now I don't have to look out the window when I need to know how the weather is... :-)

22nd April 2001 22.10 - Doing homework

Well, as the title suggests I spend the day making reports for my physics class... not exactly exciting.
Rene (a classmate and friend of mine) came with his box, and we started typin'. Around 2PM we decided that 'Hey, better get somethin' to eat!', and drove of to Burger King. They've just gotten a Mega size menu, with 0.8 L of cola, and we had to try that :-) More writing, and then he took off at about 7 PM.

Right now I'm about to read a little danish for tomorrows class, and I'm probably (I hate spelling that word) going to watch a little tube before I'm off to bed.

Haven't spend much time codin' this weekend, expect for Saturday were I spend a couple of hours on the project for the University. It's getting along.

'Till next time...

21st April 2001 13.50 - Picture update

Updated the 'Pictures section' with a couple of pictures taken with my webcam.

19th April 2001 18.55 - Give it to me baby...

Check it out now/funk soul brother...
Nerds are rampant sex machines...

19th April 2001 13.50 - Watchin' movies...

On Sunday I saw 'Finding Forrester' which is kind of 'Good Will Hunting 2', with the exception that it's not as good as 'Good Will...'. Really sad, since the movies stars Sean Connery who's an awesome actor, and since the story had potential.

On Tuesday I saw 'U 571' on VCR. Basic plot: 2WW, US needs the Enigma, and gets it. Funny little picture, not the greatest but okay for a Tuesday night.

Yesterday I saw 'Rules of Engagement'. A great film about a US marine who's about to become scape goat because of his actions in Yemen.

It's amazing how many pictures are made each year. Many of them never comes to the theaters here in Denmark, some is released on VCR and others never reach the country. Hollywood is a big industry... big bucks.

18th April 2001 15.00 - Being busy

Man! I'm so busy! I need to make 6 physic reports over the next 1½ weeks. That sucks bigtime. Mainly because it results in me not being able to code, and do stuff I really like.
I mean... when you go to the gymnasium in Denmark you have classes like religion, art and classical civilization, not amazingly exciting topics, but they take time.

Luckily I'm soon done with it and will get summer vacation.

On the coding business I'm thinking of a new project. It's still on the drawing board (in my mind), but when I get the time I'll start codin'. And keep you posted :-)

Just interested... who actually reads my shit ?? Please mail me.

16th April 2001 10.45 - Up Datez

I've updated the site a bit. Added the pictures link at the front page, incremented my age ;-), and... added a picture of me! Taken at Gymnet in the summer of 2000.

16th April 2001 10.35 - Back from Paris

I returned from Paris on Saturday. It was a great trip! I saw the Eiffel Tower, Louvre (from the outside), the Concorda plaza, Champs Elysses, Sacri Coer, Montmartre, and a whole lot of other stuff.
And not to forget, I had a pretty flashy birthday (yeah I'm 19 now :-) )... it was celebrated while we were seeing Versailles, the big castle extended by Louis XIV. It's huge and very nice.

Tomorrow I have to go to school again. *Sigh*. I feel like I need vacation! On the better side, It's only for about two weeks, since exams are just around the corner.
Yes! Soon I'll leave the gymnasium and head of for the university :-)

5th April 2001 19.15 - Going to Paris

Tomorrow is last day in school before the holidays - Easter that is. Early Saturday morning I'm going to Paris with my family where we're gonna spend almost a week. We're going to visit Disneyland, see the Eiffel Tower, walk the Concorde Plaza, and numerous other things you do when you're in Paris.

It's gonna be great getting away from it all... especially since I've got a lot of Physic reports that awaites finishing. *Sigh*.

For those of you interested you can check out the weather conditions in Paris by following this link to CNN's weather pages. Hopefully the weather will be warmer than the one I have here in Aalborg.

And since the talk dropped on weather, be sure to check out my buddy Gimpster's page about phpWeather, which he wrote. From the 'Demo' page you can see the weather conditions for Aalborg and for Paris, France.

By the way, I installed PWS (Microsoft's Personal Web Server) this afternoon. [awaits the slappin']. Nah... just wanted to check out the competitor, and their ASP technology. Somehow one should compare ASP with PHP; I just don't belive that that's a fair comparison - for ASP that is :-)
I'll see what ASP can do, and find out whether I like it or not.
With PWS there's only one problem: It has ASP 2.0, and the currently functioning version is 3 (and they're developing on ASP 4 called .NET). But for starters I guess it'll do.

'Till next time - hopefully there won't pass as much time as this time - be happy, and stay circular.

22nd March 2001 17.55 - Whazzaab

Ahh, knocked off a few hours at Net Image yesterday and today... that'll make some bucks! I'm thinking of saving the money earned from Net Image, so I can get a Motor Cycle License. That would be cool.

One of these days I've got to finish the project I'm working on; it's got to be finished for May, and should at that time be bug-free! That's a challenge, but hey what doesn't break you only makes you stronger.... At least I hope :-)

Tomorrow I've got yet another test, this time in physics. It's not going to be fun. However, after the test I'm gonna get some bear and celebrate the weekend, now that'll be fun.

See ya, and keep codin'

20th March 2001 19.00 - New screenshot

Hurry up, there is a new shot in the 'Screenshots Department'.

20th March 2001 18.45 - Abbrevations and new technology

Lets get it overwith (I believe this is my first rant, as it is called... ):

Everytime there's a new technology there's a new abbrev, and it's not like there's not enough out there already. Like Microsoft creating the new buzz .NET, this involves making up a lot of technology and calling these techs abbrevated names. For instance SOAP, some object oriented thingy that is used in .NET
You can actually read a text where an entire paragraph is filled with these acronyms, every other is a such. I hate it!

Call the stuff what it is, and forget the code language. Damn it!

(I know the above sucks, but hey, I'm tired of reading stuff like "COM+ will replace COM in the .NET which focues on XML using SOAP and a language like C#, VB, Jave, ASP, etc." It's hard enough to cope with evolution as it is)
Must have been the baddest piece I've written in a long time...

18th March 2001 17.20 - How time passes by

It's funny how time passes by. I could have sworn that it was only a couple of days since the last update. I was wrong!

What's happened in the meantime? On Friday we started taking tests to as a way of trying to figure out how it's going to be when we start on the exams in a couple of months. Next week we'll continue, but since we don't have tests every day, that means that I've got some time to spare. So I'm going back to Net Image and knock off a couple of hours.

That's about it. Read you in the future...

13th March 2001 19.00 - phpWeather and Postgres

I finally sat down and made a bit for Gimpsters phpWeather, namely PostgreSQL support for his new OO weather thingy.
Hopefully it works! See, I don't have a working installation of Apache, PHP4 and Postgres, but we'll see :-)

11th March 2001 14.30 - Nothing to say

I've got absolutely nothing to say at all... but that is not going to stop me :-)
A frind of mine, Gimpster, is coding a package called phpWeather, which can be used to display weather conditioins from locations all over the world. He has just released a new version (1.9), which is build with OOP in mind.
It's a pretty fun little gadget, go check it out.

phpWeather

8th March 2001 20.10 - Chillin'

I'm still tired, but I guess that's how it's gonna be.

I've coded a bit on a project, and it's really coming along now. That's great.

I better turn my attention to the television... Big Brother has started again :-(

7th March 2001 20.00 - Long time

It sure has been a long time since the last update, but... well, shit happens :-)

What's happened?
Last Saturday I was in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, to attend LinuxForum 2001. That was cool! I've never been to such a conference before and it was quite exciting. And the fact that I got merchandise like a t-shirt only made it better.

Apparently I haven't slept quite as much as I should this week, which has made me very tired. Hopefully I'll be more awake after this weekend.

'Till next time... see ya all, and have fun :-)

26th February 2001 17.20 - Britney Spears... hmmm

I think this calls for an explanation...

I watched a video of Britney's on Viva (that's a german musicchannel), something like "Don't let me be the last to know...", and thought "Heck, why not check out that gals homepage". So I did.
I's been a long since I've seen such a page. It is filled with pictures of her, the background image is of Britney in different positions (all nice and non-corny, that is).

I really remembered how much money "they" post in these kind of operations. Wow! I don't know how many figures the Britney-Spears-Operation is, but I bet that it's alot.

Besides that she's not that ugly! That would definetely be an understatement.

Almost forgot, the address http://www.britneyspears.com, go check it out, there are pictures :-)

24th February 2001 13.56 - Oh my god!

It's snowin' again! Just wanted to share the good news :-)
Perhaps I'll take some pictures of it... if it lasts...

24th February 2001 13.40 - Looking for a new computer

I'm actively looking for a new computer. Today I looked more into the graphic card part, and I've decided that I want a Matrox Millenium DualHead G450 card. As the name suggests it can run in DualHead meaning you can connect to monitors to one card. Fortunately Matrox also makes drivers for Linux, so chances are that you'll soon see some great Xinerama shots on my screenshots page :-)

22nd February 2001 17.50 - Damn it sucks!

I've used the last week coding for Net Image, which has been quite okay, had it not been because of the fact that the system I was making got changed all the time. And that the firm that are to use the system wants it in a specific way.
Basically it is bad solution-design, but it sucks anyway.

So I went home early today... mainly because I was tired but also because I couldn't stand coding on that system anymore :-)

When I'm to start in school again this monday I'm really gonna need a vacation. That's what happens when you work in your supposed vacation from school. But one gotta get money somehow.

20th February 2001 20.10 - What's there to say?

I must admit that I'm a bit surprised. Who would have thought that after working with a computer on a specific topic for 8 hours straight, one would still sit down and work at home?
Well, certainly not me. But nevertheless it's a fact. Hell I'm writing news right now, am I not :-)

One of these days I've got to make some sort of news system. This page is getting extremely long, which however is a good thing, coz' it means that I'm actually writing stuff.
One of these days, you're gonna see some triple-gold-solution.... but you better go and make coffee first :-)

19th February 2001 21.25 - New feature...

I've added a little featute: namely the infamous screenshot feature. Today it seems that every geek with respect for (him|her)self has some sort of showing the world how their desktop looks like. Well, I'm not gonna stand in the dark, so here it is.
The Screenshots Page

19th February 2001 21.00 - Tired

I'm so tired after working all day at the new place, Net Image.
But it's certainly a lot better than going to school and make a sculpture in clay...

On the Desktop side I changed to WindowMaker today. Mainly because my system as described is so slooooow. So far the speed has improved, so I guess I'll stic with wm for a while.

I found a computer at Multimedie Experten which was faily cheap, perhaps I'll buy when the week is over and I probably have some more money.

18th February 2001 17.40 - A little piece...

My computer is finally up and running again, although it's slow as hell. More about that later, the story on how it went wrong needs telling first....

I got some RAM from a friend of mine and thought I could shove them in my machine givin it at total of stunning 48 mb RAM. So I did. And the computer ate it all, no problems. But after having booted linux and five minutes spend, it suddenly complained... alot. It broke down, I did 'fsck' and rebooted about 10 times, and finally it shut up. In the meantime 'fsck' had deleted and elsewhise destroyed my entire filesystem, leaving me only the scrubbels of a system once functioning.

So I got a new disk (naive as I was, I thought my disk had gone to heaven) and installed that with Linux... same result: A crashed filesystem.
It was now pretty clear that the problem was the RAM or at least something connected to the RAM, that was what I and gimpster decided, when we tore out the troublesome RAM.
So, once again I installed Linux and this time it went okay, and it has now run for at least a day :-)

One thing is your computer breaking down, a much worse thing is one being out of ability to read and write mail. Damn! I think back to the horrible four days without mail.

It's funny how dependant you get of email, who would have thought of that a couple of years ago...?
I check my mail regularily (every two minutes), and I answer most mails within 24 hours. All of my business gets done over email. So not having it is not a pleasant thought.

Since my computer is up and running I might aswell dish it. I don't know what happened, but since I installed it over again, it's been so slooooow. I spend more time watching it swap than I use to get something done. Not nice at all. I'm seriously considering buying a new computer.... and maybe I will do so when this week is over.
As I wrote some time ago, I got at new job, and I start tomorrow (monday). Hopefully it will give me som $$ so I can get a faster computer, not a big one just one with a lot of RAM :-) I've got 256 MB SD-RAM lying on my shelve..... *grin*

Besides that, what has happened.... I installed VIM, and I know use it to edit my mail with. I seems like a nice editor for an emacs-kinda-guy like myself, and thanks to Tom Gilberts dotfiles I've got a nice configuration with colors and stuff :-)
I haven't figured out how to do stuff in it except for saving and quitting, but I guess that will come. I better get a reference card....

I don't want to write anymore, but that was a pretty bid wasn't it?

15th February 2001 14.50 - Out of Business

Just at small text bid to show you I'm still alive.

I got the flu and my computer broke down.. that's enough to take a man out of business. At least me.
When I get the time (and when my computer is up and running again) I'll fill you in on the horrible days of no computer.

In the mean time, read below, and punk azero!

12th February 2001 19.50 - Whenever you see this

Because of my webcam Azero (my web provider) decided to close my ftp-account, so I can't upload the news.
Hopefully they'll approve me soon, so I can start uploading again... news that is :-)

12th Februaru 2001 19.45 - Yeah baby

The books from Amazon.co.uk came this evening... Woohoo! Now I have some reading to do, but it's nice reading :-)

On the negative side I received a mail from my web-provider saying that I had to stop uploading the pictures from my webcam, since it generated to much traffic. That sucks!
I don't know what to do, maybe I will change, or maybe I'll think of something else... Who knows, I might make a drive-by-shooting :-)

12th February 2001 13.30 - Home from school

I woke up this morning with a sore throat, so I stayed home from school. Not the worst thing, since I was only supposed to have had 2 classes. I expect to be back in school tomorrow.

Staying home gave me the ability to do something I had better done a long time ago... buy a new chair. I know have a nice lether chair, with arms, and it can tilt. Just great :-)

The books I ordered from Amazon.co.uk will hopefully come today. I'm crossing my fingers.

11th February 2001 18.25 - Oh I forgot...

Denmark sucks! At least he national Ice Hockey team. They lost the game to France, which, had they won, would have gotten them to the Olympics in Salt Lake City.
Damn!

11th February 2001 18.15 - Relaxing

'And I'm spent'! Well, I don't wanna code anymore, I'v just finished a bit for a project I'm doing for the University, but my neck is aching after playing a stupid drinking game on Egholm...

Think I'm going to read a bit in a book I got from the library. It's called 'Femte sol brænder', which probably doesn't tell you sqaut. I translates to 'The fifth sun is burning', and it is written by Michael Larsen. The cover says that the book is a bit surreal, something about travelling to the past, and such. I hope it's good, his last book was.

And I just noticed... my english sucks! I guess that's the price you have to pay for don't having english in school anymore.

10th February 2001 19.20 - Very tired

Last night I went to a small island in the middle of Limfjorden (lies in Nordjylland) with my class. We had rented a house there, and was going to party! So we did... Unfortunately I had to go to my Grandmothers 80th birthday today, and was therefore forced to leave at 8 o' clock - after almost 3 hours of sleep.
Right now I'm so exhausted that I have trouble using the keyboard :-) I better go to bed early today.

Two days ago on Thursday I went to a job interview for a company called Net Image. The make internet sites based primarily on PHP and MySQL, which is what I'm good at :-) The interview went great, really nice people, and we decided that I should come in the winter holiday and work. Pure greatness...

Anyway, I think I'm off now. I will write some more in the morning, where by the way my kidbrother is having a birthday party for our family.

7th February 2001 21.25 - Angry... but cured

This morning I was pretty mad. I had gotten up a litte too late, and was therefore a bit stressed. Well, I started on walking to my gymnasium, a walk of about 25 minuttes, except I only had like 15!
Luckily my friend Kasper showed up... in a car. So I got a lift. Just great! That cured the anger :-)

7th February 2001 21.00 - RAM to the people

Today I got 2 blocks of 128 MB SD-RAM 133, and one block of 256 MB SD-RAM 133. The general idea was to put one block into my fathers machine a block in my one and the big one in my litte brothers machine (that gamefreak!). But the RAM didn't fit in my dads machine, so know my kidbrothers machine have 512 MB of RAM!
I'll try to see if I could smack at least a 128 block in my machine, but since it's only a Cyrix 6x86 166 MHz I don't expect much :-(
I've gotta get a new machine...

Almost forgot, I mean it's kinda like a tradition by now... The snow is almost gone know, you can see some of it lying on the side of the road, but that's all. But I believe I have found another thing to write about: the mornings are getting lighter. When I go to school it is now bright, instead of dark and sad. YEAH! I expect the spring to be here soon :-)

Days with real and good snow: 5½, not counting anymore.
Days with groose, blatter snow: 1½ (and still counting sloppily)

6th February 2001 16.45 - The books will be here soon

Just got an email from Amazon saying that my order was now dispatched... Woohoo! Hopefully I will have them before the weekend :-)

Today I found out that in Denmark there is a competition called 'Dansk Datalogi Dyst', which is more a less equivalent to 'Danish Informatics Competition'. Basically it works like this: You get two problems and a week to solve them in. You must program the solution in Pascal or C++, and must be able to explain how your algorithm works. The guys or gals :-) who score best in this competition goes to Copenhagen, where you'll learn some theory before the next competition. The four best of this will go to Finland to compete against people from all over the world.
And how does that concern me? Well, I'm thinking of entering... at least just for fun! Who knows maybe I will. I'll keep you posted :-)

Snow. So you thought I would let it go by now, well I won't! Today it began to thaw, so now the roads, pavements, etc. is filled with that grosse, grease snow blatter stuff I wrote about a couple of days ago.
Days with real and good snow: 5½.
Days with groose, blatter snow: ½ and counting.

Picture of the snow... while it lasted! They are taken with my WebCam, which I will probably write some more about when I get the time.

5th February 2001 16.40 - Amazon

Yesterday i ordered three books from Amazon.co.uk: 'The C Programming Language' by Kerningham and Ritchie, 'The C++ Programming Language' by Stroustrup, and one about good programming practices in C/C++. I expect them to be here by friday.
I had first ordered the Kernigham book from Stop4u.com, but they didn't have the book in stock although their site claimed that they did. Weird. So I cancelled the order, and used Amazon, the one and only great bookstore ;-)

A thing that's strange about Amazon is the fact that that they haven't had a profit in all of their existance. I recently read that last year they had a loss of 19 billion dollars! That's enormous.
Anyway, as long as I get my books before they get broke, I'm happy...

Oh, by the way... Days with real and good snow: 5 and still counting.

4th February 2001 16.50 - The weather

Who would have guessed? It's still snowing in Denmark! Based on what I wrote a couple of days later, well, I guess I was wrong :-)

Days with real and good snow: 4 and still counting!

4th February 2001 14.30 - Brainbench

Yesterday i received two new certificates from Brainbench, one in 'HTML 4' and one in 'Web Server Administration'. That makes it four in total, the other two I have are in 'PHP 4' and 'Apache Administration'.
The tests are actually quite fun, although some of the questions are a bit bizarre.

Today I just found out that Brainbench now charge you for sending the certificates, $7.95 in total. The ones I have were free. But well, they've gotta make money sonehow...

A final remark: go try it out yourself :-)

3rd February 2001 12.45 - Damn, it's cold!

It is so cold, and this morning I was forced to go out and clear our sidewalk for snow!
I read in the paper that this weekend, the temperature was going to be around minus 10 degrees Celsius, but becaus the wind is coming from East one would feel it as minus 20 - 30 degrees! Where's the Greenhouse Effect when you need it :-)

2nd February 2001 21.00 - Debian and Apache ToolBox

I've just installed a new server for my gymnasium and tt is running Debian Potato. The installation was fairly easy after I had made disks that didn't contain input/output errors :-)
I must say that the apt program is cool! It is so easy to install new programs, you just run apt-get install [package], and the package is installed with dependencies. I love it!

Right now I'm trying to install Apache ToolBox which is a script that can help you install Apache and a lot of extensions. I's really great!

Perhaps I'll go do some coding tonight, or perhaps I'll just relax in front of the television... Who knows, only time will tell :-)

2nd February 2001 17.00 - Ice Hockey

Yesterday I saw my first real ice hockey game. The game was between AIK (Aalborg Ishockey Klub) and FIK (Frederikshavn Ishockey Klub) and since I'm from Aalborg I cheered for AIK. It was an exciting experience, and the fact that AIK won 2 to 1 only made it better :-)

When I came home from school and flipped on my computer, it made an irritating sound, like the fan in the cabinet was broken or something like that. It turned out that it was the powercord to the cooler on the CPU that was touching the fan and therefore made the noise. Geeze, who would have thought of that ? ...

Cherio, I have 3 reports in physics, one danish essay, a math assignment, and a computer project due in the week coming.
Guess what Iøm going to do in my weekend :-(

1st February 2001 13.20 - Helix and the weather

After an hour of downloading today, the Helix GNOME Installer is finally installing the packages. It'll will be a little exciting seeing what Helix can do.

It's snowing... again. Quite cosy actually, but as always the snow won't be here for long. And that sucks! Usually it snows for a day or so, but because the general temperature in Denmark is over 0 degrees Celsius, the snow will smelt or soon turn into a gray-sticky-blatter-thing. Damn!

Oh by the way I ordered tickets for LinuxForum 2001 in Copenhagen, Denmark today. I'm looking forward in going to it, hopefully it'll be a lot of fun. I'm going with a couple of frinds of mine, Gimpster (Martin) and Tais.

31st January 2001 22.30 - I'll try again

We'll, it didn't last long! As a professional geek you need a place to put ideas and express opinions. So, in the spirit of optimism, I will to try to maintain a real site once again. I will try to write a bit at least once a day (but don't be amazed if it doesn't happen :-) ) And when I get bored enough I will make some fancy stuff...

I recently got a new internet provider which should be a lot better... but that is a bit from the truth. The fact is that it runs much slower than the line I had before. They promised that it would be 1 Mbit up- and download, but right know I'm downloading Helix Gnome with 4,26 Kb/s! One wouldn't get a speed ticket on that one!

Anyway, I think I'm of to bed... or maybe I should wait for that Helix gnome...
