Posted in Misc by Kristian Kristensen on the June 21st, 2005

I’ve just installed Spam Karma 2, and upgraded WordPress. Hopefully this’ll catch some of the Spam, which I’ve been getting an increasingly larger amount of lately.

Joel Spolsky has a new book

Posted in Misc by Kristian Kristensen on the June 21st, 2005

I bought Joels first book (actually just a printed version of some of his essays freely available online) while I was in the states during Spring. Now he has a new book coming out. The difference being who wrote the essays, this newly published one contains a “Joel selection” of the best Software Dev writings for the past year.
The following chip is from the introduction, which you can read in its entirity here.

Cover Image“The software development world desperately needs better writing. If I have to read another 2000 page book about some class library written by 16 separate people in broken ESL, I’m going to flip out. If I see another hardback book about object oriented models written with dense faux-academic pretentiousness, I’m not going to shelve it any more in the Fog Creek library: it’s going right in the recycle bin. If I have to read another spirited attack on Microsoft’s buggy code by an enthusiastic nine year old Trekkie on Slashdot, I might just poke my eyes out with a sharpened pencil. Stop it, stop it, stop it!

    IT Companies sponsor Motor Races

Posted in Misc by Kristian Kristensen on the June 19th, 2005

I like to watch Formula 1, and most recently Le Mans on the television, and have been increasingly puzzled by what appears to be a common trend. Namely that large IT companies sponsor the teams competing in these events.
Why is it that companies like Sun, HP, Intel, and AMD amongst others are keen in sponsoring this type of sport?

Maybe the explanation is simple: Geeks dig Motor Sport! :-)

    deltaLock for Pocket PC

Posted in Misc by Kristian Kristensen on the June 19th, 2005

This App is cool! When launched it locks your pocket pc, which’ll unlock after you press and release a button combination of your choice. I’ve been needing such an app, because when I listen to podcast’s on my Pocket PC Windows Media Player keeps it “On”, which means I inadvertently press some buttons I shouldn’t have.
    So kudos to that!

A new Monad build is up on betaplace. To get it, go to beta.microsoft.com, sign in (yes, you need a Passport account), then give the guest ID “mshPDC”, and follow the directions for the Microsoft Command Shell preview.

Uhhhh… this looks good! I would LOVE to go to PDC – just check out the flair on the right of my blog!

Wait until you see how much software you’ll get at PDC05.  Along with the latest builds of Longhorn and WinFX, you’ll get a last-minute release of Visual Studio 2005.  We’re at 10 gigabytes already and it’s only June.  You may need to check this thing as baggage on your way back home.  So, strap yourself in and head for LA for the ultimate download.

    Passed SOE

Posted in Uncategorized by Kristian Kristensen on the June 18th, 2005

So, yesterday was the day for my exam in Software Engineering (SOE), which I’ve reading for the past week. I picked Analysis Modelling, and presented the topic, and it was good enough to let me pass the course. Great!

During the exam I mentionend Doc Searls and his IT Garage, and promised to ping my lecturer with it. Doc often presents the intriguing metafor of how software relates to the construction business (we use builds, we use tools, etc.). Anyway, as always there’s an interview with him at IT Conversations.
Anyway the ping has been made :-)
