Console error in Beta 2

Posted in Microsoft by Kristian Kristensen on the May 31st, 2005

I have to code a multithreaded application for a course at university, and decided to give Visual C# Express Beta 2 a spin. The application is supposed to be simple without a lot of fancy UI, so I though a Console app would be appropriate. However, during my frantic codin’ I discovered that a IOException was continously called with “The handle is invalid” as message. Digging into the error message revealed an error in a Win32 API. Weird, I thought, as I googled the problem.

The answer is found in this blog posting by the Base Class Library Team: Issues with Console APIs when stdout is redirected to a file [Ravi Krishnaswamy]
The fix is here: How to: Use the Quick Console Window

    Studs from Microsoft

Posted in Microsoft by Kristian Kristensen on the May 27th, 2005

    This is just great :-)

I have no idea where the “Studs from Microsoft” video came from or how old it is and I had to download it first before playing it, but it was totally worth it to see Bill Nye as a ‘softie and to watch those women run for their lives instead of facing the possibility of dating any of us. : )

    Deploy .NET Applications on Linux

Posted in Microsoft by Kristian Kristensen on the May 26th, 2005

TheServerSide reports about a new product from Mainsoft that allows deployment of .NET Applications on Linux

Mainsoft and the Mono Project have joined forces to enable .NET developers to extend their application deployment to Linux environments. The product, called Grasshopper allows ASP.NET, ASMX Web Services, and other server based applications to be compiled to Java bytecode and executed in a J2EE server running on Linux.

Mainsoft are the infamous firm that have a .NET IL to Java Bytecode compiler and is the highly praised company featured in Eric Sink‘s article Geeks Rule and MBA’s Drool on MSDN a while ago. Looks like this company is moving quite a lot!

Kim Pedersen reports about his use of Sharepoint in a University project at AAU:

This semester I've been using Microsoft Sharepoint with my group. That actually worked quite well. It has a good file management system and is well integrated with Microsoft Office.

Martin comments: I’ve chosen the Dark Side :-)

Posted in Microsoft by Kristian Kristensen on the May 25th, 2005

My post about being elected as MSP draws attention from Martin, who comments:

It’s official: you’ve chosen the Dark Side :-) But still, I wish you good luck with it!

Back in the good old days when Martin and I attended High School we often had the traditional discussions about Microsoft vs. Linux. It all started on our first year when I started using Linux, and bragging about its capabilities as home server OS. Martin who was a die hard NT fan at that time counter argued me, and that proved to be a nice way to spice of the often boring classes we had. However, as time went on Martin eventually gave in, and installed Linux.
After High School when I started at University I found out about .NET and my fanship of Microsft has increased ever since. So the tables have turned, Martin preaches Linux, I preach Microsoft. The ways of the world :-)

PS: Do comment on this, Martin. It would be nice to get some of the old discussions back; dull classes still need a bit of spice up!
