XML is like…

Posted in Misc by Kristian Kristensen on the March 10th, 2005

Heh… Better start using some “XML”!

From Chris Maden through Ewald:

XML is like violence: if it doesn’t solve your problem, you aren’t using enough
of it

    Ajax in Ruby on Rails

Posted in Uncategorized by Kristian Kristensen on the March 10th, 2005

Wicked! Ruby on Rails (RoR) definitely looks like a million bucks! If only I had a project to utilize it on…

Before Rails go 1.0, it’ll be the framework with the easiest support for Ajax on the block.

    Software Development West Conference

Posted in Misc by Kristian Kristensen on the March 8th, 2005

Just found out that there is going to be a Software Development Conference in Silicon Valley during our stay there. And the best of it, if we register by March 10th it is free!

… on March 17th I’ll be in Silicon Valley at Software Development West where Software Development Editor in Chief Alexandra Weber Morales will interview me in a “fireside chat” format. I don’t know if they are actually going to have a fireplace; we might have to burn twigs and promotional literature on stage. If you want to attend the fireside chat all you have to do is register for an “Expo Pass” which is free online until 3/10; onsite or after 3/10 it’s $50.

Removing the snow from my parents attic

Posted in Misc by Kristian Kristensen on the March 7th, 2005

Yesterday I was visiting my parents, and while getting some work out of hand I suddenly heard a *splash* nearby my laptop! Gosh! Snow had flown in under the roof and was no melting due to warmer conditions. So I was commandered up to the attic to remove the snow with a shovel and three buckets. It went okay, only side effect was a sore back.
After such an experience I better understand why miners get worn down :-)

    It is always the hardware

Posted in Misc by Kristian Kristensen on the March 5th, 2005

David H. Hansson has a horrible story to tell of their server software upgrade:

The jury was back. We had just wasted forty hours of our lives growing disillusioned by our apparent total lack of skill in keeping Basecamp in a meaningful state of production. My knees were x’ed for nothing. I had forced our new employee into sleep deprivation and all-day shifts for nothing.

WE HAD GAWD DAMN A BROKEN SERVER!

    Take Control of E-mail

Posted in Misc by Kristian Kristensen on the March 5th, 2005

This is so true! Eventhough E-mail is a great invention, and indispensable in my day to day life, it’s necessary to turn the bugger off! If you don’t you’ll never have time off. The same goes for that annoying invention called the telephone (as described in PeopleWare).

Today I decided to stop the madness. An email every few minutes and desktop alert + sound to go with it makes it to easy to lose focus on my task at hand and look at my inbox. While I loved this feature when Outlook came out, it’s become my achilles heal of productivity. No more.

    1. Tools->Options
    2. Click E-mail Options…
    3. Click Advanced E-mail Options…
    4. Uncheck:
    1. Play a Sound
    2. Briefly change the mouse cursor
    3. Show an envelope in the notification area
    4. Display a New Mail Desktop Alert (default Inbox only)

I highly recommend reading The Tyranny of Email. Do email on your time.

    Visual Studio 2005 (Code-Named “Whidbey”) Beta 2

Posted in Code by Kristian Kristensen on the March 5th, 2005

    Yippie!

Despite some anticpitating an earlier release, Beta 2 is still on target for a release date of March 31, 2005. Look for the full release to come out in the September-October timeframe.
