Got my UPS
I’ve finally got a UPS for my server. It is a APC Smart-UPS 700, and I’m using apcupsd as control daemon from my server. It’s a pretty cool UPS with lots of extra power, so I’m planning on hooking up my firewall/gateway too.
Work is going okay, currently I’m planning and starting developing an intranet thingy in ASP.NET. I expect it to be quite cool.
The weather in Denmark is really sucky at the moment, and is probably going to be like this for the next week or so.
IPCop
I installed Smoothwall (see below), and thought “Hey, that’s pretty cool!”. Afterwards I found IPCop, installed it and immetiately knew that this was the cooler one ![]()
I now have a network configured in three zones: an external one (connected to the firewall through the RED ethernet card), an internal one (the GREEN ethernet card) and a DMZ (ORANGE ethernet card). The firewall makes sure that requests coming on port 80 (the http port) is forwarded to my server.
I strongly suggest that you install IPCop if you need a firewall/router/gateway.
First week at work is over. I guess it was okay, I haven’t done alot in the past week, other than drinking quite a few cokes and surfin’ then net
I kind of hope that next week will be more busy…
Bought some stuff
Bought some ethernet cards and a switch. Actually I’ve bought 4 cards
And I’ll be using three of them in my SmoothWall firewall, when I get the time to set it up…

Reinstalling server
A week or so ago there the weather in Denmark was really bad. It rained a lot – more than it normally does
– and there was a lot of thunder. During this mayhem the power was off for a short period and my server couldn’t handle this
Therefore it needed a reinstall.
I started the reinstallation yesterday afternoon and after 5 hours the basis system was up. During the day I got mail and www to work, and now the server runs beautifully
The server is now installed with two RAID 5 arrays each consisting of three disks. I’m running kernel 2.4.18 and using ext3 as filesystem.
Finally managed to figure out what the onboard ethernet card is. It’s not a 3Com card as I thought, it is an AMD PCNet PCI FAST card, which means that the driver supporting the card is distibuted in a standard kernel.
My next project is moving the server to another location and installing a firewall on an old box I have lying around. I think I’ll have a rather thorough look on SmoothWall, which appears to be quite nice!
Started work today, which was kinda nice.
