Ximian

Posted in Misc, OldNewsOnZianet by Kristian Kristensen on the May 21st, 2001

I’ve done it! Ximian Gnome is now installed, and I’m currently downloading Evolution through Red Carpet, which is quite a nifty tool :-)

Faulty RAM

Posted in Misc, OldNewsOnZianet by Kristian Kristensen on the May 21st, 2001

Finally, I got my act together and tested the RAM in my machine…and that was about time. It turned out that one block was full of errors (no wonder Mozilla kept doing segmentation faults), that one is now torn out and awaites replacement.
I used a program called Memtest86. You create a boot disk with the program, boots on it, and it will perform all kinds of tests. The Readme file is very exhaustive and tells you what and how the program performs the tests.

Right now I codin’ on a project for my firm… nothing exciting.

Guestbook

Posted in Misc, OldNewsOnZianet by Kristian Kristensen on the May 19th, 2001

Well I’ve got a Guestbook. Go ahead and sign it!

It’s a script I found on a search from Google, and that’s why it doesn’t really fit my page style. But heck, it’s a guestbook, and it’ll do for starters.

One could wonder why I put up a guestbook, here’s the reason. Upon reading some of the statistical material generated for my ISP, I found that a get a large number of sessions from North America. Pretty exciting, except I don’t really know who it is or how they found my site. This is where the guestbook come into play. Perhaps some of these exciting guests will sign it, and I can see why they come her ;-)

‘Till next time…

Speed

Posted in Misc, OldNewsOnZianet by Kristian Kristensen on the May 17th, 2001

It’s so great having a new fast computer! Now I can actually get some work done, without having to wait when I switch between emacs and my browser…

I’ve found program called Memtest86 to test your RAM with. I makes a bootable floppy, which launches a program that runs for about 11 hours testing ones RAM.
All I need now is to find out when I can spare 11 hours :-)

With Gimpster I tried to download Ximian Gnome, but without luck. The installer stops when verifying the downloaded packages. I tried to mail the support departement of Ximian, and the reply was ‘do you have enough disk space?’. Well, I don’t know, I though 360 Mb was enough.
After deleting files worh of 80 Mb I’m now trying again. Hope it works *crossing my fingers*.

New computer

Posted in Misc, OldNewsOnZianet by Kristian Kristensen on the May 16th, 2001

I got my new computer yesterday at about 7 PM. Today the computer was finally working properly after a little help from Gimpster.

It runs with 140 MHz bus speed with a 7.5 multiplier, which gives around 1050 raw Athlon MHz :-) The machine has 384 Mb RAM in it. Beside that nothing big is going on. I’m getting a new keyboard, mouse, matrox G450 DualHead card, and a 19″ screen.

Ordered a new computer

Posted in Misc, OldNewsOnZianet by Kristian Kristensen on the May 14th, 2001

That’s it! I’ve done it… ordered a new computer that is. As I wrote yesterday it’s a Athlon 1000 Mhz with 128 Mb SDRAM PC133, a Soltek motherboard with 266 Mhz FB, and a case. The rest of the essentiel parts I have in a box on the floor :-)
That setup should go for a while, and when I feel the need to upgrade I can take one part at a time. One thing is for sure, eventually I’ll need a bigger harddrive. The one I use only has 2 GB of space.

Got a job for the summer

Posted in Misc, OldNewsOnZianet by Kristian Kristensen on the May 13th, 2001

Now I know how to spend my summer. I’m going to participate in Studenternet’s ITCampus 2001. The site is being build in PHP4 with MySQL and it’ll use XML. I’m really looking forward to it!

Other than that nothing much is happening. I plan on buying a book on XML and XSL tomorrow or the day after that, so I can get up to speed on the technology.

And finally I’ve become so tired of my computer that I’ll buy another one. Man, it is so slow, that I have to wait when I switch windows!! That suck! And it used to be okay fast, but suddenly over the last couple of days it’s just been so slooooowww…
Anyway, I’m buying an Athlon 1000 Mhz with 128 Mb RAM (and I’ve got some RAM lying around to pop ind). For starters that’ll do.

Exams!

Posted in Misc, OldNewsOnZianet by Kristian Kristensen on the May 11th, 2001

Before I take on the dreadful thing the title suggests I’ll tell what’s happened over the last few days.

On Wednesday I “succeded” in getting sick, some kind of the flu with huge fever. But luckily it didn’t last for long. I was more or less fresh yesterday where I had to come to school, ‘coz our plan og exams were being published.

I got the four worst classes: Danish, History, Mathematics and Physics. Not that I suck at ‘em, it’s just that they are the single four classes we have in all of the three years, meaning the examination requirements for these classes are huge! Not much of life for Kristian over the next month or so….

On the MP3Server front I’ve decided to write a client for Windows in Delphi 5. Yeah, I know it isn’t very linux-advocate-like, but I’m not skilled enough to do it under Linux :-(
Anyway, I’ll publish something here when progress is coming (I’ve gotta get started first…).

What rocks?… My MP3Server!

Currently playing as I write this: [Wheatus] – [Teenage Dirtbag] [00:54/04:03] [ 22%] [95]

The server is now up and running. I can control it through a web interface from anywhere in the house (courtesy of a computer of course), use an app for Gkrellm, or use a ncurses app on the server itself. It’s very cool and very neat.
Wish I had a digital camera to fill you in…

The only problem now is that I’ve already filled the harddrive with music. I better order that IBM 45 gig hard-drive anytime soon now.

On the more educative front I start on exams this week. Tuesday it’s written physics. Now that’s not going to be fun!

Playing while I upload :-) : [Jennifer Lopez] – [Love Don`t Cost A Thing] [00:57/03:42] [ 25%] [95]
